Prime Minister Modi announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs. 2 lakhs to families of newborns who died in a fire in Jhansi hospital's NICU and Rs. 50,000 to the injured.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday condoled the loss of lives in the fire at the Maharani Laxmibai Medical College at Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh, in which 10 newborns were killed and 16 are reported to be battling for their lives.

The fire, reportedly caused by a short circuit in an oxygen concentrator, spread rapidly due to the oxygen-rich environment in the NICU.

PM Modi expressed grief over the tragic fire at Jhansi Medical College, claiming 10 children's lives. He announced RS 2 lakh ex-gratia for each victim's kin.

The UP government has also announced Rs 50,000 each to the families of the injured from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund.
