The boy, who has not been named, was charged with murder, attempted murder and possessing illegal weapons. The officer who died early Saturday morning was identified as Detective Joseph Azcona.

A Newark police officer was killed in the line of duty Friday night in a shooting that also wounded a second officer, according to police union officials. The officers were shot at 6:37 p.m. in the area of Broadway and Carteret Street in Newark, according to a statement from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.
