Thousands of cell phone users reported a service outage on Wednesday morning, and the issue appears to be affecting a wide array of providers.
Verizon customers on X have reported seeing “SOS” rather than the traditional network bars on their smartphones, and even the network provider’s own status page struggled to load, likely due to the number of customers trying to access it.
The wireless carrier apologizes for the outage, which it finally fixed after about 10 hours. Affected users can expect 'account credits.'
Verizon announced that a Jan. 14 service outage has been resolved after it stretched for nearly 10 hours across the U.S. The wireless carrier said in statements on X late Wednesday that it " let many of our customers down " and promised to provide account credits to affected customers.
Verizon Communications said late on Wednesday it had restored mobile phone service and planned to offer affected consumers credits for a 10-hour outage that disrupted calls, texting and internet usage for hundreds of thousands of customers.
Verizon says it's working to restore service. But if your Verizon device still shows "SOS" instead of service bars, you're affected by today's outage.
The outage is affecting the eastern United States. Downdetector, which tracks outages, reported a spike nationwide in outages after noon ET Wednesday, with tens of thousands of reports from across the country. Locations with reported outages include New York City, Chicago, Houston, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Miami, Charlotte and Dallas.
