A federal judge temporarily blocked a Texas law requiring public schools to display the Ten Commandments, ruling it likely violates the First Amendment.

A federal judge has temporarily blocked Texas from requiring nearly a dozen public school districts across the state to post the Ten Commandments in every classroom.

The state law had said public schools would have to display the Ten Commandments in a “conspicuous” location in every classroom in Texas by Sept. 1.
