Republicans celebrated a consolation prize in Wisconsin Tuesday night, predicting that the big win for a strong voter ID law in the critical swing state could have reverberations as far away as California.

Some social media users found it suspicious that Wisconsin voted for a liberal justice and a GOP-led referendum. But that shouldn't be a surprise.

The state has required voters to use photograph identification for nearly a decade, but an amendment to the Wisconsin Constitution was seen as making it more difficult to roll back that rule.
