A man thought to be a citizen of Bangladesh was arrested in India's financial capital Mumbai on Sunday and is considered the prime suspect in the stabbing of Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan, police said.

The accused worked at a Worli restaurant before he joined a Thane restaurant. When he was caught stealing, his employment was terminated.

Meanwhile, the police are yet to recover the part of the knife used to attack Saif Ali Khan. According to a report in The Times of India, the police said that the accused broke into Saif's home with the intention of robbery because of extreme poverty.

Police revealed that Saif Ali Khan's attacker, Shariful Islam Shehzad Mohammad Rohilla Amin Fakir, panicked after seeing his image on TV and planned to flee to Bangladesh, but was apprehended following the extensive investigation.

Saif Ali Khan's attacker gained entry into the actor's Mumbai building by scaling the compound wall and found the security guards asleep, allowing him to enter undetected, police have revealed.
