A “highly venomous” sea snake that’s “potentially lethal to humans” was found on a popular surf beach in Hawaii in a rare sighting, officials said. The yellow-bellied sea snake was found alive under a log on Honoli’i Beach on the island of Hawaii, according to a Feb. 14 news release from the Hawaiʻi Department of Agriculture.

As many Washington families take vacation this week for mid-winter break, those traveling to Hawaii for a taste of sun should keep an eye out for this dangerous reptile.

A live three-foot yellow-bellied venomous sea snake washed ashore Honoli’i Beach in Hawaii last week. Officials have since urged residents and visitors 'to be wary of any snake-like reptile' in or around the ocean.

The state is urging the public to be careful after a highly venomous yellow-bellied sea snake was found on a Hilo beach last week. On Feb. 4, the Hawaii Department of Agriculture’s Plant Quarantine Branch (PQB) was notified by the state land department that a live snake had been found pinned under a log at Honolii Beach.
