Spain sets World Cup record with 6th clean sheet in a row and keeper Simón extends scoreless mark
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Spain broke a World Cup record with its sixth consecutive clean sheet and goalkeeper Unai Simón extended his record shutout streak to 609 minutes after a 1-0 win over Portugal on Monday.
Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon has kept another clean sheet and set a World Cup record without being scored against in 519 minutes. The record came in Thursday's 3-0 victory in Austria as the Athletic Bilbao keeper edged past Italy's Walter Zenga who did not let in a ball in 517 minutes at the 1990 edition.
Spain's incredible defensive run at the FIFA World Cup finally came to an end, but it was not enough to stop them from reaching the semifinals. Goalkeeper Unai Simón's record 650-minute shutout streak was snapped by Belgium in the quarterfinal on Friday before Spain secured a 2-1 victory thanks to a late goal from Mikel Merino.
Unai Simón's impressive World Cup scoreless streak has ended. The Spain goalkeeper kept a clean sheet for a record 650 minutes, the tournament's longest scoreless run.
Spain beat Cristian Ronaldo's Portugal 1-0 in a FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 match in Dallas to book their place in the quaterfinals on Monday.
