The $6.3 million grant was targeted under President Donald Trump’s effort to cut programs the government considers “diversity, equity and inclusion,” or DEI.

The University of St. Thomas is planning to appeal a decision by the federal government after it canceled a grant program that impacts 185 students pursuing careers in special education, amid wide-ranging cuts by the Trump Administration on previously approved federal funding.

The $6.8 million grant funds scholarships and stipends for 185 students. The St. Paul university said it doesn’t view it as a DEI initiative.
