A horse was struck by a vehicle and killed Saturday evening on the Assateague Island National Seashore, according to a social media post by the park. The horse — a 16-year-old mare named Gizmo — was hit by the car around 9 p.m. on Bayberry Drive within the developed zone.
Speeding cars have long been a problem on Assateague Island, advocates say, with few drivers heeding the 25-mph limit and the island’s resident wild horses suffering the consequences.
