From Kirby Dach to Lane Hutson to Kaiden Guhle to Cole Caufield, there was a lot of meaning to draw from a Canadiens win over the Canucks.
But the Canadiens organization should be incensed with the NHL. This game didn’t get off to a great start for the Canucks. First, Jonathan Lekkerimäki got laid out in open ice by Kaiden Guhle, then seconds later, Cole Caufield ripped home his 22nd goal of the season to make it 1-0 Canadiens early on.

Quinn Hughes returned and J.T. Miller had his best game of the season, but the Vancouver Canucks still coughed up a two-goal lead to lose in overtime.
Shortly after surrendering the 4–3 goal, Vancouver was gifted a power play opportunity after Caufield took a slashing penalty. As Hughes pushed the play closer to Montréal’s net, he sent the puck over to Miller. His smooth pass was sent over to a patiently waiting DeBrusk, who tucked it past a turned Montebault.
Guhle has a helper in each of the last two games and four points over his last seven outings. His assist came up clutch Sunday, as he fed Patrik Laine on the game-winning goal 3:20 into overtime. Guhle is up to 12 points, 52 shots on net, 61 hits, 95 blocked shots, 27 PIM and a minus-1 rating through 40 appearances in a top-four role this season.
As Montreal Canadiens fans wake up the morning after the club’s 5-4 overtime win over the Vancouver Canucks on Monday (Jan. 6), they’ll notice something special: the Canadiens are officially in a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
