Opening in November the market in Cathedral Square closes on Sunday, December 22 with the German Market closing on Christmas Eve in Victoria Square and along New Street.

Germans visited a memorial in Magdeburg, Germany, for the at least five people killed and more than 200 injured at a Christmas market, after an attacker drove a vehicle into a crowd.

Police made one arrest after the vehicle drove "at least 400 metres across the Christmas market", leaving behind a trail of bloodied bodies at the city's central town hall square.

The Magdeburg market, one of over 1,000 in the country, was especially busy on the final Friday evening before Christmas. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz condemned the suspected attack on social media.
