The Colorado Avalanche Information Center is urging backcountry travelers to exercise extra caution across the Colorado mountains through the weekend as dangerous avalanche conditions persist.

A skier died in an avalanche, Colorado officials said. On Jan. 7, a backcountry skier was “caught, buried, and killed in an avalanche on Red Mountain Number 3” near Bollywood, according to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center.

A backcountry skier was caught, buried and killed Tuesday in an avalanche near Red Mountain Pass in southern Colorado’s San Juan Mountains, officials said.

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT) - The Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC) is reporting the first avalanche death of the year. This incident happened on Jan. 7th on Red Mountain number 3, east of Telluride, which is locally known as Bollywood. The avalanche occurred on a northwest-facing slope around 11,300 feet.

The accident marks Colorado's first reported avalanche fatality, per Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC) data.

A man snowshoeing in Colorado’s San Juan Mountains survived with only minor injuries after being partially buried by an avalanche on Sunday. According to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC),

When 11 News crews arrived on scene at around 11 a.m., it appeared both Colorado Springs police units and an armored vehicle were on scene.
