Du Plessis (23-3 MMA, 9-1 UFC) was handily beaten by Chimaev (15-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC) in the form of a unanimous decision at United Center in Chicago, ending his reign as middleweight titleholder with two defenses under his belt.
Chimaev, who has been billed as a future megastar since his UFC debut, finally captured gold at UFC 319, and the money followed. His payout from the event is believed to be between $1.8 and $2 million, the highest paycheck of his career so far.
