The police dispatch on the radio Friday night was a staccato of static, terse orders, and alarm. An officer was down. A suspect was “out,” presumably on the ground, awaiting EMS. There was a search for another possible weapon.

Police officers from across New Jersey lined up outside the medical examiner's office in Newark on Saturday to salute Newark Police Det. Joseph Azcona, who was shot and killed in the line of duty Friday night.

The boy, who has not been named, was charged with murder, attempted murder and possessing illegal weapons. The officer who died early Saturday morning was identified as Detective Joseph Azcona.
