Maine lifeguards prepare for potential waves, rip currents from Hurricane Erin
YORK (WGME) – Hurricane Erin won't hit Maine, but the state will see the potentially dangerous waves and rip currents. The waves at Long Sands Beach started to pick up in intensity Thursday evening. A local lifeguard says this time of year is already challenging, and storms like this add another layer of complexity.

On Hurricane Erin is crawling past the Bahamas as a strong Category 2 storm and is due to head toward the Carolinas and then veer northeast over the open Atlantic Ocean. Although the storm’s eye may never come within 300 miles of the mainland U.
The major impacts will be felt at the beaches, with high surf expected. A high surf advisory is in effect until 8 p.m.
This past week has been challenging for lifeguards in southern Maine, where rip currents have resulted in multiple rescues.
On average, 71 people drown in rip currents every year in the U.S., according to the National Weather Service, though Maine has never reported a rip current fatality.
