Broccoli packages sold at Walmart stores in 20 states have received an elevated recall status over a Listeria contamination that has potentially fatal consequences.

In early January it was revealed that Walmart's washed and ready-to-eat 12 oz. Marketside Broccoli Florets were voluntarily recalled by Braga Fresh due to a possible contamination of Listeria monocytogenes. Although the item is no longer on shelves, consumers could still have bags in their freezer.

A recall of bags of Braga Fresh broccoli florets has been revised and is now listed as a Class 1 recall, the highest level of risk the FDA issues.

When the FDA upgrades a recall, it's time to check your fridge or freezer for that particular product. This broccoli now poses a more serious Listeria risk.

Broccoli florets sold in Walmart stores across 20 states that were recalled over bacterial contamination fears have been given the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)'s highest risk level. A single production lot of the washed and ready-to-eat Marketside Broccoli Florets by Braga Fresh were voluntarily recalled after random testing by Texas Health and Human Services in a store identified the presence of the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes.
