🛑 Waymo’s AI Taxis Are Safer — But Can They Outrun Tesla’s Cheap Robotaxi Fleet?A major change is quietly taking place on the roads of America. Not with drivers but without them. Self-driving taxis, also called robotaxis, are finally here. And two giants are leading the charge: Waymo and Tesla.
Riders can hail a Waymo across 90 square miles of Austin, including neighborhoods like Crestview, Windsor Park and Franklin Park and locations like The Domain and McKinney Falls State Park.
Waymo robotaxis are now available exclusively on the Uber app in Atlanta. It’s the second city after Austin host the companies’ burgeoning partnership.
“With recent growth in Austin and California, plus opening in Atlanta with Uber, Waymo now serves more than 700 sq mi across the US,” the company said. According to Waymo, it has driven over 100 million fully autonomous miles without a human behind the wheel.
Waymo more than doubled its robotaxi service area in Austin just days after Tesla showed off a phallic-shaped service area expansion in the city.
Waymo and Tesla ramp up robotaxi efforts, signaling a major shift in urban mobility and the future of autonomous transportation.
As part of the arrangement, Baidu will introduce thousands of its Apollo Go autonomous vehicles on Uber’s platform in areas outside of China and the United States.
Waymo v. Uber wasn’t the one thing that ousted Travis Kalanick from the helm of the company he founded, but it probably helped. And at the very least, it led to Anthony Levandowski getting fired.
Waymo currently operates fully autonomous robotaxi services in Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Austin.
