Jimmy Carter's funeral service is underway at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., on Thursday, where the former president will be honored in tributes and through musical selections and performances.

Thursday's service will cap off six days of remembrance for Carter, who died on Dec. 29 at the age of 100. After the funeral, Carter will return to Georgia to be buried in his hometown of Plains, next to his beloved wife of 77 years, Rosalynn Carter.

"Mrs. Obama sends her thoughts and prayers to the Carter family, and everyone who loved and learned from the remarkable former president."
