For around a month, both Apple Maps and Google Maps routed eastbound drivers around I-90 construction in Washington State, sending them down dirt roads where they got stuck and had to be towed.

A Washington State Highway Department map from 1933 shows the northern portion already called that – at least on paper – and, on the same map, the Pasco-to-Spokane section is called Highway 11.

The Google Maps route created a day-long ordeal that threatened to strand Easler and her family in the California desert before they slowly backtracked to safety, she told The Washington Post.
