On Sunday, Keith Law of The Athletic projected third baseman Matt Shaw as the most likely candidate to be traded, citing some off-field red flags the Cubs had gleaned from his profile in addition to his up-and-down rookie season on the field.

That was projected to rank 11th among all MLB clubs next season, according to Spotrac. The Cubs were also projected to have $35.2 million in projected tax space next season prior to Bregman's signing, per Spotrac.
But the move created a logjam also involving Nico Hoerner and Matt Shaw, and now the Cubs risk making a big mistake. According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, the San Francisco Giants are "aggressively pursuing" a second baseman and are "engaged" with the Cubs in trade talks about Hoerner.
