With villages swept away and Pakistan’s largest city assailed by monsoon floods, climate change has brought a catastrophic new normal to the country.

Pakistani officials have skillfully navigated Trump’s political world, analysts said, fostering closer ties with the White House at a time of U.S.-India tensions.

Emergency teams searching for the missing are struggling through mud and debris, following flash flooding in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

Residents in a hilltop village in northwest Pakistan described how raging waters and rocks had swept through their homes after a cloudburst, as authorities said on Tuesday the toll from floods in the region over the past five days had risen to 365.

Cloudbursts are causing chaos in mountainous parts of India and Pakistan, with tremendous amounts of rain falling in a short period of time over a concentrated area. The intense, sudden deluges have proved fatal in both countries.

Hundreds of climbers try to scale mountains in northern Pakistan every year. Accidents are common because of avalanches and sudden weather changes.

By a widely accepted definition, a cloudburst means more than 100 mm of rainfall in one hour, over a small area.
