US secretary of state Marco Rubio is set to meet Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov on Thursday in Malaysia, on the sidelines of the Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting, as tensions between Washington and Moscow deepen over the conflict in Ukraine.

An impersonator recently used AI to pose as Marco Rubio, the US Secretary of State, to send messages to five senior-level officials. Three of these have been identified as foreign ministers, while the remaining two were US officials, as per reports.

A person or people imitating the secretary of state used artificial intelligence to send text and voice messages to foreign diplomats and U.S. officials, the department said in a cable to employees.
