Supervisor engine is the brain of the device - and are used only on modular switches. Where you have fixed form factor switches like the 3560, all of the control plane, CPU, etc are built onto the motherboard.

Unless you are doing network engineering for a large ISP offering MPLS, IPv6, and mulicast services or for a backbone internet provider, I doubt most people would ever see a Cisco 6500 in the access layer. Cisco does make a smaller version called the ME6500 for use as an access layer switch for the purposes I mentioned above.
