On May 4, 1932, Al Capone was put into a special rail car on the Dixie Flyer, under heavy guard, en route for the U.S. Penitentiary in Atlanta. He was destined for celebrity status.

Feb 14, 2020 · In 1931, Al Capone began an 11-year prison sentence for tax evasion. His big house away from home was Georgia's Cook County Jail. According to the Chicago Tribune, at Cook, Capone and his bodyguard received special "VIP accommodations" and meals prepared by the mobster's wife.

Feb 3, 2015 · Upon his arrival at the U.S. penitentiary in Atlanta, GA, medical authorities officially diagnosed him with both gonorrhea and syphilis. The brain damaging, late-stage form of syphilis which afflicted Capone, greatly eroded his already scant mental capacity.

Before arriving at Alcatraz, Capone had been a master at manipulating his environment at the Federal Penitentiary in Atlanta. Despite strict convictions from the courts, Capone was always able to persuade his keepers into procuring his every whim, and often dictated his own privileges.

Jan 2, 2014 · Capone had been sentenced to 11 years to be served in the Atlanta Penitentiary for failure to pay federal income taxes. He would only serve two years here in Atlanta before being transferred to Alcatraz.

The only time it can be certain that Al Capone ever got out of the Atlanta Penitentiary is on Aug. 19, 1934, when prison guards came to his eight-man cell in the night to put him on a train bound for California, for San Francisco, where he’d take a boat to the newly opened Alcatraz.

Capone was sent to Atlanta U.S. Penitentiary in May 1932, aged 33. Upon his arrival at Atlanta, Capone was officially diagnosed with syphilis and gonorrhea . He was also experiencing withdrawal symptoms from cocaine addiction, the use of which had perforated his nasal septum.
