Lava boat tours on the Big Island offer a front-row seat to one of nature’s most extreme displays, where molten rock meets the ocean in a fiery collision. However, these tours are extremely dangerous due to littoral explosions, which can send molten rock and debris flying unpredictably—like in 2018 when a lava bomb injured 23 people. The ocean near lava flows can reach over 200°F, and the reaction creates “laze”—a toxic mix of acid, steam, and glass particles that can cause serious health issues
