Why do some people with celiac disease experience symptoms after gluten exposure and others don’t? Unfortunately we don’t have a clear answer, but it does not correlate with degree of healing. Right now it’s just a mystery. But that’s why follow up care is so important 💛 Earlier this year, Dr. Lebwohl, Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology at Columbia University Medical Center and the Director of Clinical Research for the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University, spoke on the current recom

Healing from celiac disease can take time. Some people start feeling better right away while others it may take longer. Follow up care with your medical team is super important to ensure that your healing is moving in the right direction, you’re not missing hidden sources of gluten, and that there’s not something else going on causing symptoms. If you have celiac disease, your first degree relatives, meaning parents, siblings, and children, should be screened regulary. As long as they do not have active symptoms, regular blood tests looking for antibodies should be sufficient screening. Fun fact, over 1/3 of the population carry the genes for celiac disease but only about 5% of those with the genes will go on to develop celiac disease. This is part of why genetic testing alone can not diagnose celiac, but it can rule it out. | National

For those of us with celiac disease, food is literally our medicine 💛 Through the National Celiac Association’s Feeding Gluten Free program, we work year-round to send gluten-free food every month to individuals and partner pantries across the country. Chris was in Nashville this weekend, so he stopped by Costco to buy some supplies for @thestore_nashville Not all food pantries are able to provide for this medically necessary diet. If you are looking to help outside of a financial contribution

Did you know about this celiac history? 🤯 Or which city / country has the best GF food you’ve ever had? Italy is my answer!! 😍Willem Karen Dicke was the first doctor to link celiac symptoms to gluten intake in the late 1940s / early 1950s. Doctors in Europe reproduced his results & began prescribing a gluten free diet to celiac patients. But in the US, doctors continued to follow the lead of Dr Syndey Haas, who recommended a banana diet followed by reintroducing grains, including wheat. 😅👉 T

Courtney | Celiac Travel + Living on Instagram: "Did you know people diagnosed with Celiac Disease in Italy receive a stipend from their government to offset the increase in gluten free costs? We spent 6 weeks in Italy a few years back and it was by far the easiest place I have traveled. I LOVED it so much I'm going back and I leave in a week🙌🏻 Any product that is labeled gluten free or "Senza glutine" is legally required to also be safe from cross contact and is therefore safe for anyone with
