A lot of people have asked about this Sharpie “wax resist” technique, so here is my glazing my process: - Using a Metallic Gold Sharpie, I draw my designs onto a bisque fired piece. It’s important to make sure the lines are inky and solid. - After a few minutes of drying, I submerge the whole piece in glaze (Cone 10 reduction) and the sharpie drawings resist the glaze! - Once my glaze is dry, I go back and skim off large drips of glaze using a metal rib. I also use a detailing tool to remove any

KILNFOLK CLAY STUDIO on Instagram: "We’ve been trying out a metallic @sharpie (gold specifically) instead of wax resist for detail work- the lines stay crisp, and it feels easier to control than wax. Plus the cleanup is so easy! It sounds like different clay bodies react differently, so we’re going to keep experimenting. Test tiles are always recommended if you’re trying this for the first time. 😊 Have you used this technique? Share your experience in the comments! #waxresist #sharpieresist #me

Earlier this month we posted a reel about using gold metallic @sharpie as an alternative to wax resist! Here is the final result of the piece shown in the beginning of that reel! 🥳 ❓A few clarifications/answers to some common questions we got about this technique: 1) We drew the design with Sharpie Gold Metallic fine-point permanent marker on bisque ware (previously fired clay), not green ware. 2) In our limited experience, this method works best when dipping with a stable (not runny) glaze, ra

If you’ve been following along with my glaze resist tests, you’ll know I’ve tried various crayons and Sharpies on a flat surface. This time I’m putting them on top of my slip trailing lines. On the left hand side of the tile, I scribbled hard with soft crayons on top of the leaves. On the right hand side, I drew with the exact same crayons, but with only a single pass. The nice thing about gold Sharpie resist, is that you only have to draw with a single pass, and it resists really well. While th

Stacia Miller on Instagram: "I saw that gold sharpies resist glaze on a reel from @ashenwrenceramics and my mind is blown! This is much easier than waxing my slip trailing lines. 🤯 I’m sure there are many ways to use this knowledge, but this is my first experiment with it. So excited! #Pottery #PotteryReel #PotteryReels #CeramicsReel #CeramicReels #WaxResist #PotteryWax #Sharpie #SharpieArt #GoldSharpie #PotteryTips #ILovePottery"

✨ The Gold Sharpie Ceramic Hack is BACK! If you use wax resist or do Cuerda Seca, you have to ditch the messy brushes and try this! I’m using a common gold oil-based paint marker (like a Sharpie) instead of wax. It gives you crisp, perfect lines for glaze separation, and it fires off clean in the kiln—it’s a total game-changer for detailed designs! Have you tried this hack yet? My previous reel showing how some Sharpies resist glaze slurry got a lot of questions, so I did some testing! I started with a variety of Sharpies, Oil based Sharpie paint markers, and several brands and colors of crayon. Only the gold Sharpie, bronze Sharpie, and gray Comet brand crayon resisted well enough for my liking. I might try more colors of comet brand crayons in the future. The second tile has all the same colors in the same order, but I force the glaze to cover the resist, so I can se
