A Pygmy Owl in its natural habitat, perched gracefully on a textured branch. Its piercing yellow eyes and intricate, brown-speckled plumage contrast beautifully against the soft green backdrop, while its small yet fierce expression commands attention. The fine details of its feathers and the rugged branch add incredible depth to the composition. In a striking display of nature’s raw power, the owl clutches its prey—a small mammal, possibly a rodent—highlighting its skill as a relentless hunter.

Minutes after leaving a nest and climbing a leaning tree, a Northern Pygmy-Owl explores its surroundings. Owls cannot move their eyes their sockets so instead they must rotate their heads to change their perspective. Northern Pygmy-Owls are among several North American owls that rely upon woodpecker created cavities for their nests. | Paul Bannick Photography

This Northern Pygmy-Owl appears to have eyes in the back of its head. These false eyes help protect the pygmy-owl's true eyes. Small birds will mob this diurnal owl, sometimes striking it. Most of these little birds strike at the owls eyes. The large false eyes can take the brunt of these attacks, resulting in little harm to the Pygmy Owl's true eyes. Here is some video footage I took these evening of one of these cute little owls near Grande Prairie,AB | Famous Amos Photography

Yellowstone National Park’s - Northern Pygmy-Owl is a tiny owl. A very feisty predator, sometimes capturing prey up to three times their size or even larger! They eat mostly songbirds but also feed on mice, chipmunks, insects, and small lizards. Northern Pygmy-Owls are diurnal (hunt during the daytime), so they are easier to see than most owls, but they are so small that they often hide in plain sight. They may perch on the tops of a tree or an open snag but be overlooked or passed over as a son

This weekend, the Alaska Raptor Center received a call about a Northern Pygmy Owl who had collided with a window. 🦉 Fortunately, after a few hours of observation and a quick meal, this little one was ready to spread its wings and head back to the wild! Did you know Northern Pygmy Owls are the smallest owl species in Alaska? Though small, they are fierce hunters, often taking on prey larger than themselves! We’re thrilled to see this owl back in its natural habitat and wish it safe flights ahead
